Easy’s Tapas & Martinis, Beaumont, Texas

Small place of fried food from Easy's Tapas & MartinisThis little place, on a side street in downtown Beaumont, Texas, is where locals go when they want small plates and some inventive martinis.

This is the best martini bar in town,” says owner Wayne Ingwersen. “People come here for the martinis.”

Ingwersen and his wife Karen opened Easy’s seven years ago and haven’t looked back. They serve more than 20 different martinis, including Watermelon, the Trashy (a shaken vodka martini with a skewer of “trashy treats” like watermelon, peppers, and olives), and the Cajun (pepper vodka, vermouth, olive juice with stuffed jalapeno olives).

Customers, who Ingwersen says are typically 35-50 years old and “want a more adult, low-key atmosphere,”  also come for the small plates. Think of it as tapas with a Gulf Coast-Cajun-Texas twist. Their best seller is the hot and crunchy shrimp made with panko crumbs and red pepper on top of crispy fried spinach. They also offer Phyllo Triangles, Fried Artichokes, Steak Bites (blackened beef with peppers and onions), Fried Calamari, and Easy Trash, a mélange of seafood sautéed in blackened butter and served with a bit of white rice. While several of the offerings were tasty, by far the outstanding dish was the Easy Trash (we ordered a second plate). We’re talking delicious Gulf seafood in butter – what’s not to love?

Perhaps one of the best ways for a crowd to get a sampling of Easy’s offerings is to order a Tapa Tower, three large plates filled with four different dishes. Bobo’s Tower ($34 for two people; $55 for four and $75 for six)j includes fried artichokes, mini phyllo triangles, steak bites, and hot and crunchy shrimp. Molly’s Tower comes with Garlic and Almond Dip and Homemade Chips, Easy’s Trash, Crab Cake balls, and Pork and Sausage Meatballs. While this isn’t gourmet fare and the prices are a bit steep to make a meal out of these small treats, they make enjoyable before dinner appetizers and, with its couches in the bar and outdoor fire pit, Easy’s is a fun place to meet friends for a martini Southeast Texas style.
