Rome’s Ristorante Scarpone: Don’t Share!

A bit off the beaten path, Ristorante Scarpone is well worth the effort to find it.

Our lunch in Rome was absolutely fantastic. We’d asked our guide to take us to a good Italian restaurant where the locals eat. He took us to Ristorante Scarpone, which was off the beaten path, but well worth the effort to find it.
We chose to dine outside on the gravel “floor” under a flowering trellis. In Florence the day before, we‘d ordered too much food. This time, we decided to share portions. I wanted to order something that I could compare to with dishes I knew from back home, so my sister and I split a salad and an order of ravioli.

Scarpone's features incredibly sweet tomatoes -- unlike any Gail has ever eaten before!
The salad was perfect and my sister, knowing I don’t really like tomatoes, took all the cherry tomatoes. But she kept telling me how good and sweet they were, so I decided to try one. They were amazing — the best tomatoes I’ve ever eaten. I just had to keep stealing more off her plate!

Ravioli worth another trip to Italy!
The ravioli was to die for. The pasta was delicate and tasty and filled with plenty of ricotta cheese and basil. The tomato sauce, fresh and sweet, was like nothing like I’ve ever eaten before. The ravioli alone is worth going back to Italy for!
I also ordered iced tea, which came in a large pitcher. I had a little help finishing it, and it too was refreshingly wonderful.
My only regret about this stunning meal was sharing — I could have eaten the whole thing myself. Well, I’ll just have to go back to Italy….
