Main Street Bistro & Bakery, Plano TX

Down-home Delicious

The restaurant that has all the earmarks of a neighborhood French bistro.

In Plano, Texas, an upscale suburb just outside of Dallas, there’s a back-to-the-future movement going on with mixed use development that’s recreating the idea of neighborhoods where people live, work, eat, and play. One of these is Legacy, an exciting neighborhood filled with condos, apartments, restaurants, and shops ranging from home décor and clothing to barbershops and dry cleaners. A restaurant that has all the earmarks of a neighborhood French bistro is Main Street Bistro and Bakery. It’s a hip, fun little place with high ceilings with swirling fans, small marble tables, and big windows that look onto pedestrian-friendly Main Street.

When you walk in, you can’t ignore the dessert case filled with French-style pastries and desserts – the Bomb, Opera Cake, Bastille, Chocolate Cheesecake, Citrus Tart, Tiramisu, Raspberry and Lemon Bars, Fresh Fruit Tart, Cheese Danish and both Chocolate and Almond Croissants. Amazingly, these beautiful desserts are reasonably priced from $2.25 to $5.50.

There's no skimping on filling or almonds on top with Main Street's signature almond croissant.

I sampled their signature Almond Croissant, a big eight-inch wedge of flaky, buttery dough topped with lots slivered almonds and powdered sugar. Inside, there’s plenty of not-too-sweet almond paste. Pair this with a cup of their Italian Segafredo coffe, smooth , rich and served in an oversized cup, and you’ve got yourself a lovely breakfast or afternoon treat.

A generous serving of sweet potato fries is one of the bakery's not-to-miss items.

This bistro also serves soups, salads (spinach, Caesar, mixed green, tomato-mozzarella-basil, and chiciken cobb), cold and hot sandwiches and paninis, hamburgers, and light meals (crepes, quiche, filet with cognac, fish and chips, etc.). One of their new specialties is sweet potato fries, that are light, crispy¸ and delicately sweet. They come in a large serving dish that’s plenty big enough for two (though I can’t blame you if you opt not to share).

I was so impressed, we also had breakfast at Main Street. They specialize in French-influenced offerings like crepes (ham, Swiss, and béchamel; cream cheese and berries; hazelnut Nutella and bananas) and French toast with strawberries. They also offer eggs and omelets with your choice of veggies, meats, and cheese addition, Belgian waffles and pancakes. I’m a big pancake fan and Main Street does them right – light and airy with just the right tooth.

All of us agreed that the beignets are well worth the calories!

A not-to-miss item is their beignets, a plate of fried dough heaven with just the right chewiness that’s liberally dusted with powdered sugar and served with café au lait crème anglaise for dipping. This is a serious dose of love!

Their cinnamon twist is 12 inches of soft, cinnamon goodness that had one of my traveling companions swooning.

I ordered lox and bagel, served with dill crème cheese, caper and tomato and red onion slices. The bagel was large and chewy with plenty of poppy seeds; the crème cheese wasn’t too dilly; and, while the Atlantic lox can’t compare with the oily Pacific version, my order was satisfying and filling.

While the bagels served at Main Street aren't the classic, chewy New York style, they're still delicious.

Real Bottom line: If you’re staying in or visiting the Shops at Legacy, Main Street Bistro and Bakery is definitely worth a stop for breakfast, lunch, or a light dinner. If you’re not in the area, their delightful pastries alone are worth a trip across town. Review by BH.
