Fresh, delicious, home-style cookies and brownies—delivered right to your door!
Plenty of products come into realfoodtraveler.com’s offices for editorial review, but imagine our surprise when a beautiful black and white stripped box with a frothy red and white ribbon arrived chock full of big cookies and filled brownies, each individually wrapped to ensure freshness. The treats came from Harvard Sweet Boutique, an online gourmet bakery that’s been creating gift boxes of cookies and brownies, all made to order in small batches.
We quickly assembled a tasting panel and dug into the cookies, which are big, at least 4-inchers. And they’re home-style, the kind of cookies you’d make if you had the time and all the great ingredients they use at Harvard Sweet Boutique, such as the best Madagascar vanilla, high cocoa butter dark and white chocolate chunks, buttery pieces of toffee, fresh AA butter, sulfite-free dried fruits, kosher salt, and-freshly toasted oats and nuts. They make their products without preservatives, trans fats, commercial oils, or artificial color or flavors.
Their Chocolate Chunk Cookie is a rich and homey cookie with a nice soft/chewy texture and plenty of big chunks of semi-sweet chocolate. The Molasses Ginger Cookiehas a bold ginger flavor, soft on the inside, chewy on the outside with sprinkles of coarse, crunchy sugar on the top. Not everyone on our panel appreciated this cookie. One editor who’s not fond of ginger cookies, found the ginger flavor too strong. But others thought the rich molasses contrasted well with the ginger. If you like ginger cookies, you’ll love this one.
The Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie, a hands-down favorite among our tasters, is a big, chunky cookie with subtle peanut butter with plenty of generous pieces of semi-sweet chocolate. Half the cookie is dipped in a thick layer of bittersweet chocolate. White Chocolate Cranberry Oatmeal is a moist chewy delight and a comforting cookie that makes you want to eat it with a cold glass of milk. Some of our reviewers thought it was a bit sweet; all felt the cookie would be even more successful without the white chocolate. Despite that, there wasn’t a crumb of this cookie left! The final cookie we sampled was the M&M Cookie, a vanilla style absolutely stuffed with colorful M&M candies. A bit on the sweet side for our taste, this is one kids will love.
Our tasters liked Harvard Sweet Boutique’s cookies, but they were over the moon for their brownies. Sue George, the founder and creative force behind the bakery, has a formula for her filled brownies: a thick layer of chewy, rich dark chocolate brownie on the bottom, a super-creamy layer in the middle, and a thinner top layer of dark chocolate that’s swirled with decorative white chocolate. And this creates a delightful combination of textures—moist, chewy, and creamy – all with interesting flavors.
We sampled the Raspberry Chocolate Fudge Brownie and found the raspberry fresh and fruity and the-raspberry-dark chocolate combination really intriguing. The Mint Chocolate Fudge Brownie had a clean minty flavor. The Vanilla Sea Salt Caramel Brownie, a favorite of the tasters, was super chewy and rich with a buttery caramel. The sea salt added a nice accent that cut the sweetness.
With the Coconut Macadamia Blondie, Harvard Sweet Boutique elevates the basic blond brownie with shredded coconut, roasted macadamia nuts, and chunks of dark and white chocolate. It captures a tropical essence and was definitely a crowd favorite. In fact, one of our editors commented, “I could eat these all day long.”
Our final treat from Harvard Sweet Boutique was a big, crisp piece of buttery toffee. This candy was topped with slivered almonds and had just the slightest lilt of cinnamon. Delicious!
Real Bottom Line: Too often, commercial cookies and brownies are less-than-satisfying. And when you order them online, the result is often even worse. Not so with the treats from Harvard Sweet Boutique. These folks use the best ingredients and make their cookies, brownies, and toffee and truffles to order in small batches and they’re absolutely delicious. They’re wrapped in beautiful boxes that make them a real winner as a gift.
Harvard Sweet Boutique sells many more flavors than those our realfoodtraveler.com’s editorial panel sampled. They also make gluten-free and low-carb options. – Bobbie Hasselbring, RFT Editor
