This modest little bistro serves up some of the freshest, from-scratch Mexican dishes using long-time family recipes. In our opinion, Mitzil is one of the best restaurants in the Portland area. Located in the little town of Oregon City, less than 20 miles south of the city, Mitzil has been serving up authentic Mexican dishes for more than a decade.
Lunch specialties include mixteada, meat or green chile hash and cheese rolled into a corn dough and grille and served with sour cream, lettuce, tomato and avocado; molotes, savory fried corn turnovers filled with meat or potato hash with salsa; and burros, small fried burritos with your choice of meats. Dinners include those choices as well as full dinners such as green chicken enchiladas, chicken Diablo, and fluffy chile rellenos that are some of the best we’ve ever eaten. These and other choices are served with their creamy refried beans and flavorful rice. They also make tamales (pork, chicken and chile, and pineapple) by the dozen or by the piece for guests who pre-order and they’re absolutely delicious.
Chef/owner Luz Martinez insists that all of the ingredients they use are fresh, never canned or frozen. Her salsas–smoky japaleno, tomatillo salsa, and red chile– are made with fresh ingredients and are packed with flavor. The fact that Luz is launching a line of bottled salsas and sauces and some spice blends is great news for those of us who crave Mitzil’s flavors. These new products will enable foodies to make our own dishes like green chicken or pork Colorado.
The party this Saturday will feature free samples, music, and fun. Mitzil is located at 212 Molalla Ave, Oregon City, OR. Don’t miss this foodie fiesta. — Bobbie Hasselbring, RFT Editor
