Finding a practical and safe travel wallet is always a challenge. I need a wallet that’s small enough to easily carry, yet large for credit cards, ID and other essential cards, and traveler’s checks and cash, including coins. And now there’s the threat of thieves being able to steal your credit card or passport information electronically. On a recent overseas trip, I turned to my old pals at PacSafe, the world’s leaders in travel security products, and their RFIDtec 100 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet ($30).
When the PacSafe Bi-Fold Wallet arrived, at first I thought, “Oh no, this is too big.” I was wrong. In fact, their RFID Blocking Bi-Fold wallet proved the perfect size. Slim, lightweight (2.5 oz.), and sporty, this RFIDtec 100 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet is thin and sporty and easily slipped into my pocket or my daypack. The Ocean Blue is a jaunty color, easily found in the depths of my pack (it also comes in black, cool steel, and a grey called shadow. It features an easy-to-use elastic strap that slips over the wallet and keeps it closed. (It certainly looks classier and works better than the heavy rubber band I’d been using on my old wallet!)
One of the things I like best about this Bi-Fold Wallet is that it has two sections for money and checks—one zippered with a special “tuck-in” zipper pull that prevents a thief from easily opening it. Because I travel for a living, these two long slots allowed me to put my folding money and traveler’s checks in the zippered pocket and all of my receipts in the other. In the past, I’d simply “cram” my receipts into my tiny wallet with my money and often lost precious receipts. With the RFIDtec 100 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet, my receipts were neat and, at the end of my trip, all in one easy, accessible place.
The other feature I’m crazy about is the slim little zippered coin compartment. It’s difficult to find a small, slim wallet with a coin compartment and this one takes an amazing amount of coin, yet the wallet stays slim and not bulky. (I’m still trying to figure out how they do that.)
I also like that there’s a transparent slot for my ID, so I don’t have to remove my driver’s license when showing it. The interior of the wallet also comes with five slots for credit or business cards and two stash spots to tuck away a few extra dollars.
I stuffed this wallet full of hundreds of dollars in cash and checks, two credit cards, my health cards,my driver’s license, a stack of business cards, some extra tuck-away cash, and plenty of coins. Still this Pac-Safe wallet remained slim and attractive.
It Foils Thieves
There, of course, there was the whole anti-theft element to this smart wallet. The zippers and their tuck-tuck away zipper pulls and the elastic band that keeps the wallet securely closed make it nearly impossible for a thief to access the interior of the wallet.
Then there’s the whole high-tech security aspect of the wallet. Today, many credit cards and even passports contain electronic chips that enable them to be accessed thieves electronically with RFID readers from as far away as 10 feet. Without RFID, thieves can read the radio transmissions and download your personal information without you ever knowing it. The Pac-Safe RFIDtec 100 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet prevents this kind of theft by using sophisticated RFID blocking material to block transmission (10MHZ – 3 GHZ).
Real Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a smart, lightweight wallet that’s easy to carry and that provides super-secure theft protection, including high-tech RFID-theft, Pac-Safe’s RFIDtec 100 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet is a wonderfully affordable choice. For $30, you can be assured that your money, credit cards, and other ID are safe from RFID thieves, while the smartly zippered pocket for cash adds an extra barrier against pickpockets. In fact, I like this wallet so much, I’ve decided to use it not only when I’m traveling, but as my every day wallet. – Bobbie Hasselbring, RFT Editor
