Unrefined coconut oil has hit the food scene as one of the healthiest oils you can use. And Carrington Farms has come up with a line of coconut oil products that are not only healthful, but easy to use.
There was a time when coconut oil was lumped in with unhealthy saturated fats. In fact, coconut oil is one of the richest sources of saturated fat, with almost 90% of the fatty acids being saturated. However, coconut oil doesn’t contain you’re the same kind of arty-clogging saturated fats found in cheese or steak. In fact, research shows that the saturated fat in coconut oil is actually good for you. Coconut oil contains so-called Medium Chain Fatty Acids(MCFAs) that are medium length fatty acids that the body metabolizes differently. These fatty acids do not have a negative effect on cholesterol. The liver and the gall bladder do not need to digest and emulsify MCFAs, so coconut oil can be used for instant energy.
According to research, coconut oil can have therapeutic effects on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer’s. It’s also has positive effects on fungal and bacterial infections. It’s also used for treating dandruff and as a sunscreen and skin moisturizer.
Coconut oil is great for cooking. It contains no trans fats or hydrogenated fats and is good for high heat cooking up to 350 degrees F (higher than olive oil). It can be a delicious replacement for butter or fat and is great for sautéing or roasting vegetables like sweet potatoes. However, because most coconut is a solid much like butter or shortening, it’s previously been a bit harder to use in cooking than liquid oils. However, Carrington Farms has come up with liquid coconut oils taking away any excuse not to use this delicious oil.
100% Extra Virgin Coconut Oil– Carrington Farms sells their original unrefined, cold pressed organic extra virgin olive oil in a tub as it comes in solid form. (It also comes packaged in a large, 54 ounce jar.) It’s made from fresh coconuts, not copra, dried coconut kernels some manufacturers use to extract oil. It’s certified organic, is gluten-free and chemical-free. Open the tub and you’ll smell coconut and, when you cook with it, foods will have a subtle coconut flavor. (Try it on popcorn!)
Our editors also sampled Carrington’s liquid coconut cooking oils, including their unflavored/ordorless, garlic and rosemary flavors. These oils are great alternatives to traditional liquid cooking oils such as vegetable, olive, canola and corn oils. They contain four times more medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) than other oils, which are easily absorbed and digested and put to use as energy for the body. This coconut oil is shelf-stable, doesn’t require refrigeration, and will keep up to two years.
Coconut Cooking Oil– This odorless, colorless oil can be used anywhere you’d use butter or liquid cooking oil. Like other Carrington coconut oil products, it comes in a hexane- free, solvent-free, and BPA-free bottle.
Garlic Flavor Coconut Cooking Oil– Open the bottle and you’ll smell the sweetness of roasted garlic. It contains nothing but 100% coconut oil and garlic oil. This one is great for roasting or sautéing veggies, fish or meats, or anywhere you want a little garlic flavor. We used Carrington Garlic Flavor Coconut Cooking Oil to cook potato wedges on the grill and they were delicious.
Rosemary Flavor Coconut Cooking Oil- This one tastes and smells like stepping into my herb garden. The rosemary flavor, which comes from natural rosemary oil, is pronounced and adds a lovely herbal flavor to foods.
They also offer a new Sriracha Flavor Liquid Coconut Cooking Oil, but we didn’t sample it.
Real Bottom Line: If you’re looking for healthier cooking oil, try coconut oil. If you want coconut oil that’s organic and is made from fresh coconut, check out Carrington Farms coconut oils, including their line of easy-to-use liquid coconut cooking oil.– Bobbie Hasselbring, RFT Editor
