Our editorial panel sampled several flavors, including:

Surfin’ Safari Chocolate Chip– This ice cream sandwich includes two big, chewy chocolate chip cookies surrounding ultra-smooth vanilla bean ice cream.

Bitchin’ Chocolate Chocolate– This one is for serious chocolate lovers. It’s two fudgy brownie cookies with “hot” spicy ice cream. Bite into Bitchin’ Chocolate Chocolate and you get an instant deep chocolate hit followed by an almost peppery sensation at the back of the throat. It’s a sweet-hot chocolate delight.

Strawberry Surfer Girl– Two soft sugar cookies sandwich strawberry balsamic swirl ice cream for a flavor that’s tangy and not overly sweet. This one was a real favorite of our tasting panel. They loved the subtle strawberry flavor and the tang that the balsamic flavor offered. One editor said, “This is like having frozen strawberry shortcake.”

Strawberry Surfer Girl is like eating a bowl full of fresh strawberries with cream.

Ginger Wipe Out– Two, super intensely-flavored molasses cookies envelope a scoop of candied ginger ice cream. Our judges really liked the soft molasses cookie and found the bits of candied ginger offered a chewy tang.

Key Lime Cowabunga– These soft coconut cookies with key lime ice cream made our editors say, “Wow.” It’s a lime explosion for the mouth. One editor, who loves key lime pie, said, “I love this one. It’s like having a key lime pie in an ice cream sandwich.”

Even their dairy-free vegan offering is tasty.

Dakine/Gluten Free, Dairy Free– This ice cream sandwich, made with a gluten-free chocolate chip cookies and dairy-free ice cream is perfect for vegans. While many GF/vegan baked goods taste like cardboard, this GF chocolate chip cookie is actually tasty. While dairy-free ice cream will never have the rich, smooth mouth-feel and flavor of ice cream made with cream, if you let this one warm up just slightly, it’s got good flavor and will satisfy vegans looking for a good ice cream sandwich.

Real Bottom Line: Hats off to Beachy Cream for making organic ice cream sandwiches that go beyond the usual flavors. Our editors loved the fun flavors, the silky smooth ice cream and the big, chewy cookies. And next time I’m in Santa Monica, you can be sure I’m heading for Beachy Cream. – Bobbie Hasselbring, RFT Editor
