Carla Hall’s Petite Cookies: Big Little Cookies

Carla Hall cookies 11 (1280x853)When Carla Hall’s Cooking with Love cookies arrived at the realfoodtraveler.com offices, we had no idea who Chef Carla Hall was. But it didn’t matter because we fell head over heels in love with her petite—and we mean teeny, tiny—and super flavorful cookies.

Carla Hall, one of the celebrity chefs who regularly appears on the show “The Chew” and “Top Chef” and the author of Carla’s Comfort Foods cookbook, makes cookies the size of a sugar cube. While these little bites are small in size, they’re BIG on flavor.

Black Forest Crinkles are like biting into the tiniest, rich brownie.

Our editors sampled several cookies, which came packaged in stylish little plastic cups, including:

Mexican Chocolate Chip– These little cookies, the size of a quarter, are studded with tiny, “rustic” Mexican chocolate chips. They have a crisp crunch and you can really taste the cinnamony Mexican chocolate flavor.

Pecan Shortbread with Vanilla Salt– Carla has nailed the buttery goodness of shortbread. The size and shape of a sugar cube, these blond cookies have a pronounced pecan flavor and the cookie’s sweetness is moderated by the vanilla salt.

Chocolate Hazelnut Praline– Another sugar-cube-shaped cookie, these are crisp with a crumbly texture that offers a burst of chocolate flavor against a background of hazelnut flavor.

Oatmeal Cranberry White Chocolate– While most of Carla’s offerings are crispy, these tiny, round cookies are soft and chewy. With plenty they feature cranberry flavor in an oaty cookie.

Black Forest Crinkles-These cubes of dark chocolate covered in powdered sugar are like biting into a rich chocolate brownie. They have a melt-in-your-mouth texture and frankly, I couldn’t stop eating this one.

Lemon Black Pepper Shortbread– This buttery cookie was another favorite. It’s rich with lemony goodness with just a lilt of pepper flavor that offsets the sweetness of the cookie.

Almond Ginger Cherry Shortbread– Another buttery cube of shortbread, this one is crisp with the spicy flavor of ginger. If a cookie can be refreshing, this one is it.

Carla also puts out a couple of items in her Savory Collection, including:

Lemon Black Pepper, one of our hands-down favorites, has a rich lemony flavor with an accent of black pepper.

Harissa Spiced Nuts– Pecans, walnuts, and almonds are coated with brown sugar, harissa spice blend, egg whites, salt, and black pepper. The result is a spicy, slightly sweet crunch that people who like harissa will enjoy. This one would pair well with a summery cocktail.

Cheddar Pecan– These little cheesy cubes have just a hint of cayenne to kick them up a notch. Perfect with a cold beer and a hot soccer game.

Real Bottom Line: Fun for a party, the perfect size for snacking, Carla Hall’s tiny cookies offer inventive flavors and textures sure to please. We love that you can have six of Carla’s little cookies for the same calories as one regularly-sized cookie. And because they’ve got great flavors, they’re super satisfying.
