Montgomery Inn: Great BBQ Delivered to Your Door

What if you could get BBQ, really good BBQ, delivered right to your door? You can from Montgomery Inn, an iconic Cincinnati restaurant recently identified as Ohio’s most recommended restaurant on Facebook.

This family-owned barbecue restaurant chain, based in the Cincinnati suburb of Montgomery, Ohio, is best known for its specialty loin baby back ribs and its house made BBQ sauce. Begun in 1951, the restaurant started serving ribs based on a recipe developed by Matula Gregory, who owned the inn with husband Tim Gregory. It was Matula’s ribs and sauce that made Montgomery Inn famous for its BBQ and drew numerous celebrities, including U.S. Presidents Ford, Reagan, the Bushes, and Clinton; baseball legends Ken Griffey Jr. and Pete Rose; and entertainers Elizabeth Taylor, Elton John, Britney Spears, Rosemary Clooney, among many others.

Montgomery Inn’s signature baby back ribs are precooked and ready to heat and eat.

The company’s ribs enabled them to open multiple locations and they began selling their signature BBQ sauce in 1990. The ribs soon followed and are available in supermarkets within a 300-mile radius of Cincinnati. Fortunately, for the rest of us, Montgomery Inn ribs, sauce and more are available via the internet.

Our editors at Realfoodtraveler.com sampled Montgomery Inn’s Summertime Barbecue Bonanza, a grilling package being offered by the Montgomery Inn. It consists of four slabs of the family-owned company’s hand-rubbed, USDA-inspected ribs, two pounds of pulled pork, two pounds of brisket baked beans, and a bottle of the original, sweet and tangy Montgomery Inn Barbecue Sauce and the newest addition to the family, the hot and spicy chipotle Barbecue Sauce. The Bonanza came packed in Styrofoam with dry ice with all ingredients (except the BBA sauces) still well-frozen. Included were special handling/cooking instructions for each item.

Montgomery Inn Fully-Cooked Loin Ribs- These pork loin ribs, cooked low and slow, are meaty and fall-off-the-bone tender. After thawing, they require only 4 minutes on each side in the broiler for them to come out hot and bubbling. We served them with warmed Montgomery Inn original BBQ sauce and it was the perfect match.

Hickory smoked pulled pork is tender and moist with the right amount of smoke.

Pulled Pork with BBQ Sauce– This hickory-smoked pork comes fully-cooked and, after thawing, requires just a few minutes in a saucepan to heat. We served the pork as open-faced sandwiches on slightly toasted torta buns and it was terrific.

The big shreds of moist, tender pork are smoky and come with just the right amount of slightly sweet BBQ sauce. Often pulled pork is too sweet. Not Montgomery Inn’s pulled pork. These tender bites of pork have just the right balance of sweet and smoke.

Brisket Baked Beans– Montgomery Inn takes prepared white beans, bakes them with brown sugar, spices, and their BBQ sauce and adds big chunks of smoked brisket for an extra kick of flavor and texture. Unlike many baked bean recipes, these baked beans aren’t especially sweet. Instead, they’re spicy with a distinctive mustard flavor. They make a perfect compliment for the sweet pulled pork.

BBQ Sauces– The original Montgomery Inn BBQ Sauce is bright and smoky with prominent tomato flavor. If you like a spicier sauce, try their Chipotle BBQ Sauce featuring roasted jalapenos that offer a peppery, smoky flavor.

Tangy barbecue sauce slathered on Montgomery Inn ribs makes a perfect barbecue meal.

Real Bottom Line: Good BBQ is hard to find and even harder to make at home. We were skeptical that BBQ frozen and shipped to our office door could be as good or even better than some of the wonderful BBQ we’ve tasted in places like Kansas City. We happily report we were wrong. Montgomery Inn’s BBQ items are freshly made, packaged, and frozen before being shipped. Easy and fast to reheat, the Montgomery Inn BBQs products we sampled—ribs, pulled pork, baked beans with brisket, and their BBQ sauces—were all excellent.

Montgomery inn also offers other BBQ items, including brisket, smoked chicken, pork chops, brats, wings, and cheese bread. We can’t wait to try them all. – Bobbie Hasselbring, RFT Editor
