We enjoyed this delicious, boozy coffee drink on the Viking River Cruise’s Rhine Getaway itinerary, which sailed from Basel to Amsterdam. It was presented one afternoon as a demonstration on board in conjunction with afternoon tea. Viking often does food or drink demonstrations for passengers which is a nice extra. Our thanks to Viking for sharing the recipe with us. Keep in mind that menus tend to change and rotate, so consider this an example of the kind of treat that is offered.

Rüdesheim Coffee Recipe
Reprinted with permission of Viking.
(From the Viking Cruise Lines Website) Hans Karl Adam, a German television chef, invented this delicious beverage to promote Asbach Uralt brandy—a famous German brandy dating back to 1892, and one of the best you will ever drink. The coffee is named after Rüdesheim am Rhein, Germany, a storybook village known for its vineyards, and is served in many of the local restaurants there.
Prep time: 5 minutes / Cook time: 1 minute / Makes 1 serving
Ingredients:
The Coffee
3 cubes sugar
3 TBS (44 ml) Asbach Uralt brandy, very warm (Editor’s note: Substitute your favorite brand if you can’t get this one)
5 oz (148 ml) coffee
Garnish
Sweetened whipped cream
Dark chocolate shavings
Directions:
The Coffee
Place sugar cubes in a coffee cup, pour brandy over the cube and light with a long match. Stir until all the sugar has melted. Allow to burn for 1 minute, then pour hot coffee into the cup.
