Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?

For a White Christmas where Santa’s more likely to arrive on a surfboard than a sleigh, head to the SLO (San Luis Obispo) Coast.

Set between Pismo Beach and San Simeon, the Coast offers 50-plus miles of glistening strands, bucolic beach towns and wineries, and a spring-like Mediterranean clime.

And much more: This holiday season, The SLO Coast is pulling out the stops, offering a bevy of holiday festivities you won’t want to miss:

From Christmas markets featuring German beer gardens and artisans, to tree-lighting ceremonies, lighted boat parades, downtown parades, dazzling light extravaganzas, Christmas concerts, holiday runs and visits from Santa, there’s tons of food, fun and festivities for the whole family.

Here’s a rundown of the holiday fun happening
where and when along California’s SLO Coast in 2024:

In historic Santa Margarita Ranch in San Luis Obispo:  The oldest continuously operated cattle ranch in California, established in the late 1700s as part of the famed Mission Trail, hosts many festivals, including Christmas at the Santa Margarita Ranch Friday, November 29 through Sunday, December 22. This family-friendly celebration offers a variety of festive activities, including a ride on the Pacific Coast Railroad’s Jingle Ball Express, a marketplace featuring locally crafted goods and tasty treats from food trucks with s’mores to roast over cozy fire pits. Enjoy games like bocce ball, giant board games and cornhole, along with pony rides provided by Central Coast Trail Rides. A special magic show will also be part of the fun.

In Cambria, the Cambria Christmas Market runs from November 29 to December 31 (closed Dec. 2-3, 9-10, and 24-25). This holiday walkthrough event dazzles with over 3 million lights, a German-inspired artisan vendor marketplace, visits from Santa, a festive train ride and seasonal food and drinks. Enjoy traditional German cuisine like bratwurst (including a vegan brat), hand-breaded schnitzel sandwiches, pretzels, and a sausage trio plate with currywurst; and traditional sweets like lebkuchen (gingerbread hearts), kettle corn, and gooey cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing, all homemade by local pastry chefs. For a little extra cheer, sip holiday-inspired beverages like gluhwein (warm mulled wine), hot cocoa with a spirits shot and craft beer. In Pismo Beach: The annual tree lighting event at the Pismo Pier takes place December 6, with cookie decorating, Santa photos, bouncy castles, and more. The tree is so big you can see it from the air! In neighboring Shell Beach, lace up your running shoes for the annual SBIG Shell Beach Holiday Stroll on Dec. 16.

In San Luis Obispo, celebrate the holiday season with an array of festive activities:

• Kick off with the 48th Annual Downtown SLO Holiday Parade on Friday, December 6, themed “Whimsical Wonderland.” This tradition, dating back to 1976, features nearly 90 decorated floats, marching bands, vehicles and dancers, drawing thousands to downtown SLO each year.
• Santa’s House at Mission Plaza welcome visitors from Friday, November 29 through Tuesday, December 24. Pose for photos on Santa’s front lawn and then head inside to purchase a souvenir photo package and receive a festive treat.
• Experience the holiday magic of Rod & Hammer’s third annual Christmas at The Carrisa. Opening on November 8, this immersive holiday bar and restaurant transforms downtown SLO into a nostalgic winter wonderland that perfect for sipping, snacking and strolling. This year’s installation offers five unique holiday-themed features: Ticket to Ride the Polar Express, Buddy’s Hall, Whoville Christmas, Visit Kevin at His Home and Max’s Patio: Christmas for the Dogs. Enjoy festive, whiskey-centered cocktails from Rod & Hammer like the Gingerbread Martini, Pomegranate Fizz and Cindy Lu Who Punch, along with seasonal bites like Snow Crab Mac & Cheese and Reindeer Meatballs. The festivities run through January 2025.
• For a special holiday dining experience, the iconic Madonna Inn will be adorned in full holiday splendor, offering seasonal meals on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. If you’ve never seen this place, now’s the time to visit, if only to gape at the pretty-in-pink tennis courts, golf carts, carpets, swivel chairs, rental bikes and even the sugar in the shakers, with room décor running the gamut from Tarzan to Barbie’s Dream House.

In Morro Bay, the Lighted Boat Parade will take place on December 7 along the Embarcadero. Watch as the fishing, leisure and yachting community sails by in boats decked out with bright lights and holiday cheer. The Rotary Santa House will open before the parade, and guests can enjoy hot chocolate, coffee and cookies during the parade. Festive music by the Morro Bay White Caps Band will play at the pier.

In San Simeon, experience the magic of Hearst Castle during the holidays with special tours from late November through December. Step back in time to see the estate as Mr. Hearst’s guests enjoyed it during the 1920s and 1930s, adorned with festive décor. From grand outdoor wreaths to towering Christmas trees in the large social rooms, Hearst Castle transforms into a winter wonderland. The staff continues the historic tradition of decorating the estate, creating a truly enchanting holiday atmosphere.

In Paso Robles, known the world over for wine, the holidays are when Paso Robles’ small-town charm takes center stage. The entire town is decked out with lights and decorations, downtown park transforms into a winter wonderland, and there’s plenty of festive feasting, family activities and exciting annual events. Many of the 200-plus wineries, award-winning restaurants, breweries, shops and attractions celebrate with specials and unique offerings. There’s no place like Paso to wrap up 2024 and welcome 2025, so check out these holiday festivities:

• The Christmas Light Parade will take place on December 7 in the evening at the Downtown City Park. This year’s theme, “Sleigh Bells Ring, Are You Listening?” promises a festive evening filled with holiday cheer.
• Sensorio (Open in December from Thursday-Sunday, 4:30-9pm): When the sun goes down in the hills of Paso Robles, the lights come up at Sensorio, one of California’s largest immersive art exhibitions. Walk easy paths through more than 100,000 glowing bulbs, like bioluminescent flowers from a jewel-toned fantasy land. Explore several solar-powered exhibits that merge light and music technology with dreamy color. In addition to their holiday décor, Sensorio will host Santa on site on December 14, 15 and 19 and a holiday craft fair on December 21. Throughout the holidays, there will be a variety of holiday-themed food options, along with hot chocolate stations around the venue. Sensorio’s new DIMENSIONS features large-scale metal sculptures that explore the relationship between light and music, shadow and pattern, environment and form, creating an immersive audiovisual experience.
