I love a good hat that straddles function and flattery – it’s a little thrill to have perfect strangers say, “Great hat!” as you pass. Unfortunately, I have a big head (it’s all those brains?) and can rarely find a hat that is fashionable, provides sun protection, and fits! I’ve finally found all three in two beautiful Wallaroo Hats. But these are no typical hats.

The Lady Jane Wallaroo Hat has gone with me recently to (top right) a Celebrity Cruise, (bottom) to The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado and (top left), Bimini in the Bahamas. Photos and graphics by Real Food Traveler.

Wallaroo Hat Company has collaborated with the talented actress and artist, Jane Seymour, to create The Lady Jane. Both styles of hat feature a scarf designed with Jane’s colorful artwork, laced through the base of the cap, secured through grommets (it won’t fly off!). One has a blue and white theme (perfect for a cruise or beach vacay). The other has pretty jewel-y tones great year-round, but especially in the fall. The hats come tied in a bow at the back, stitched down lightly to keep the bow in good form. I decided to trim the stitches on the blue and white one so that I could have the look of the scarf hanging down and flowing freely, but kept the bow intact on the jewel-toned one. The hats are lovely and go with so many colors in my wardrobe. But, they are more than just a pretty face, I mean, hat.

Wallaroo Hats specialize in sun protection
The brim of The Lady Jane is wide enough to help shield your face but not so wide that it’s unwieldy. All Wallaroo Hat Company hats have UPF 30+ and 50+ that are proven to help prevent skin damage and skin cancer. In fact, Wallaroo has been granted the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation. The weave is dense, yet is flexible. And the style is flattering to a variety of face shapes and hair styles.

The Lady Jane packs easily
The Lady Jane hats are soft enough to fold and put in a purse, tote bag, or suitcase and still come out looking great again. But my favorite trick for packing hats in my suitcase is to place the hat in the center of my suitcase (or, in this case, nest both Lady Jane hats together) and fill in the cap with soft items like lingerie and socks. I, then, pack around it. The filled cap keeps its shape and the brim doesn’t get bent. Best of all, the Wallaroo hats don’t take up unnecessary space in my suitcase!

Customize the fit on your Wallaroo Hat
This was really important to me, what with my big head and all – The Lady Jane has a drawstring tie in the brim that lets you adjust the size. As it happens, the hats fit me perfectly without any adjustment. Finally, great looking hats that I get all sorts of compliments on that fit me comfortably, and help protect me from all the bad stuff that comes from sun exposure – cancer risk, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. The Lady Jane hats will go with me wherever I travel and when I’m home, going for walks, to concerts, farmers markets, and more. They are my new, go-to item that I keep by the door, ready to grab and go.

I was fortunate enough to receive both Lady Jane hats to facilitate this review and was grateful to, given my problems finding hats that fit and flatter.
