Things to do Oceanside, California
While San Diego is a well-known tourist destination, just an hour north, I’ve found the city of Oceanside offers discerning travelers a charming getaway with a distinctive vibe all its own. This laid-back destination blends historic charm, an iconic pier, miles of sandy beaches, outdoor activities, and an emerging culinary scene that could make even bigger cities blush.
First Impressions
My wife and I arrived on a crisp autumn day with temperatures hovering in the mid-70s. The area was a beehive of activity, reminding us of the ambiance and easygoing vibe of Cabo San Lucas. Surfers cruised the sparkling blue waves while fishermen cast their lines from the pier. Families strolled along The Strand with ice cream in hand, and beachgoers soaked up the golden sun.
Locals, affectionately known as O’siders, greeted us with a warm welcome, happily sharing insights about their little town. How had we not known about this sooner? No matter—time to make up for lost time.
Oceanside’s Coastal Renaissance
Oceanside has undergone significant changes in recent years. Once a sleepy, laid-back beach community popular with surfers and military personnel, it has invested heavily in improving its infrastructure and beautifying public spaces. While still retaining its historical charm, the city now features walkable streets, upscale beachside resorts, landscaped promenades, and striking architecture (I especially loved the whitewashed Civic Center).

The whitewashed Civic Center is a real showstopper especially when someone is jumping in front of it.
For a small seaside city, it can boast not one, but four Michelin-recognized restaurants and a wave of independent eateries. As one local chef put it, Oceanside has become something of a culinary epicenter—a place where creative chefs and fresh, local ingredients all converge to create a cornucopia of deliciousness.

Top Attractions in Oceanside
No matter what strikes your fancy, Oceanside has plenty to see and do. From surfing and waterfront adventures to shopping, dining, and art and culture, here are just a few of the highlights we discovered.
Oceanside has long embodied the idyllic surf culture popularized in the 1960s. The Beach Boys captured this spirit in their classic song, Surfer City celebrating Southern California’s laid-back coastal lifestyle.
Oceanside Pier, one of the oldest and longest in California, extends 2,000 feet (nearly a third of a mile) into the Pacific. Originally constructed in 1888, this iconic landmark has weathered numerous storms and reconstructions. Still, it stands proudly as a focal point of the town. Today, it remains a favorite spot for fishing, leisurely strolls, and watching the beach activity below, attracting visitors and locals alike.

The Oceanside Pier is always in use by fisherman. Here, one sole pole stands ready for a fish dinner.
Oceanside’s growth and reputation were significantly shaped by Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, which brought families and personnel to the area. The town’s military ties also played a role in Top Gun, one of the most iconic films of the 1980s and of which, and I was a big fan.

This was the beach cottage featured in Top Gun. Now it’s home to the HIGH-Pie Shop.
The house used in the film has since been painstakingly restored and relocated downtown. This historic Victorian cottage, one of the last of its kind, was featured in the movie and is now known locally as the Top Gun House. Today, it has been transformed into the HIGH-Pie Shop, where you can enjoy sweet, fruity hand pies while admiring some of the movie memorabilia. It’s a must-visit spot for both movie fans and foodies.
There’s something incredibly peaceful about visiting ocean harbors and marinas. I could easily spend hours soaking up the sun, watching boats glide across the water, as the sound of seagulls and gentle waves create a tranquil atmosphere.
The Oceanside Harbor and Marina has become one of the most popular destinations in town. With a variety of dining options—from casual breakfast spots to fresh seafood eateries—there’s something for every palate.
This lively area also offers plenty of water-related activities. Rent a paddleboard or kayak, hop on a sport-fishing charter, or join a whale-watching excursion.
Oceanside Adventures Whale and SeaLife Tours
Speaking of the harbor, Oceanside Adventures offers a thrilling whale-watching experience that was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our trip. Situated right at the foot of the historic Oceanside Lighthouse, this highly-rated attraction is a must-do for anyone visiting the area.
As I boarded their 2024, 50-foot, state-of-the-art catamaran, I was eager to see some of the local aquatic life up close. Although there are never any guarantees when it comes to the ocean, the possibilities during October often include sightings of humpback whales, fin whales, blue whales, and four species of dolphins.
On this day, we didn’t spot any whales but did come across a pod of at least 1,000 common dolphins. Families, including some calves, seemed to delight in jumping and playing in the water in front of our boat. Our guide explained that they have an entire process for finding fish, but to me, it looked like one of nature’s most gracefully orchestrated water ballets.
This treasure trove of surf culture has attracted tens of thousands of visitors from more than 40 countries since its opening in 1986. Although my wife and I have never tried surfing, we found the museum’s main collection of surfboards absolutely fascinating! They did a splendid job of cataloging the evolution of these various-sized boards, from the early 1900s to the present day.
They feature many interactive exhibits, such as the “Science of Surfing,” which explores how waves move and break and how different materials interact with water. During our visit, we saw Surf Art: Exploring California’s Coastal Culture, a lively collaboration with another popular attraction, the Oceanside Museum of Art.
But the most eye-catching display? A surfboard with a large, bite-sized chunk missing, placed next to a colorful bikini. This was the actual board used by 14-year-old surfer Bethany Hamilton. In October 2003, while catching some waves off the coast of Kauai, a tiger shark attacked, taking her left arm below the shoulder. Remarkably, she returned to surfing just a month later. Her inspiring story was turned into a 2011 movie, Soul Surfer, which dramatizes her life and heroic recovery.

Fortune smiled on us when our visit coincided with the weekly farmers’ market on Thursday. Stretching a couple of blocks along Pier View Way, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and street food filled the air as we approached. This popular community event draws both locals and visitors, offering everything from fresh produce and olive oils to flowers, artisan baked goods, and unique gifts.
After grabbing a quick bite, we wandered the stalls, savoring the salty air, listening to the soft background music, and admiring the many ways O’siders share the love!

Food and Drink in Oceanside
Oceanside is a food lover’s dream, with more than enough options to satisfy even the most discerning palates. From casual beachside eateries to fine dining, plus cozy coffee shops, and artisan bakeries, there’s something delicious waiting around every corner.
What’s even better is that you can come as you are in most places, without having to dress up. Locals call it “flip-flop dining,” where you’ll feel comfortable just wearing a T-shirt, board shorts, and sandals.
Here are a few of our standouts.
Brick Hotel: Tiki Bar, Cococabana, and Succulent Coffee
Our little hotel had quite the selection of liquid refreshment. We kicked off our day with a cocktail at the rooftop bar, Cococabana, where we were treated to panoramic views of the ocean. Later we enjoyed the tropical ambiance and a classic Mai Tai at the lobby’s Tiki Bar.
Before heading out for morning exploration, we recharged at Succulent Coffee on the ground floor. This cozy spot not only offered freshly brewed tea and coffee but also had walls festooned with small, green, succulent plants.
We stopped by Petite Madeline after hearing from locals it was a great place for breakfast or lunch. My wife and I had a hard time resisting their display cases, filled with a colorful array of delectable pastries and cakes. So, giving in to temptation, we added a couple of these to accompany our breakfast sandwiches and crepes. A great breakfast—European style!
When former three-Michelin-star chef Brandon Rogers decided to open his prime burger joint in South Oceanside, he wanted to do it right. Using single-source, high-quality USDA Prime beef, he smashes single or double patties on the grill, topping them with crispy bacon and caramelized onions inside a brioche bun.
But, that’s just the beginning. His hand-cut potatoes are cooked twice in beef tallow, giving them a golden finish with just the right amount of crunch. The rich and creamy milkshakes, made with pure Dutch chocolate and sourced from an organic dairy, were a necessary indulgence for us.
We savored every bite and sip and vowed to return. Not surprising since the spot comes recommended by the Michelin Guide.
What’s not to love about a craft brewpub and Baja-inspired tacos? With consistently high ratings on social media, Craft Coast serves both in a relaxed, informal setting.
After picking your main, typically tacos or a bowl, you choose your protein. Options include birria, al pastor, carne asada, pollo asado, and veggie. My wife and I went with their birria on corn tortillas and paired with one of their refreshing non-alcoholic drinks. It was some of the best of both worlds, this side of the border.
Housed in an “industrial farmhouse,” Flying Pig blends classic French cooking techniques with a Southern edge. As owner Roddy Browning puts it, “Southern hospitality is about making people feel welcome. That’s what we aim for.” They have also been recognized in San Diego Magazine’s Critic’s Pick for Southern cuisine in 2022 and 2025.
The atmosphere in this gastropub is strictly casual, with a laid-back vibe and eclectic decor.
Starters included what I consider to be comfort foods like deviled eggs, pork belly, and crispy shrimp with Cajun remoulade.
Dinner selections featured fried chicken with herb gravy, shrimp and grits (a Southern delicacy!), and short ribs in a rich bourbon and molasses sauce.
I tried their pork belly braised in a habanero apricot glaze and bourbon tomato bacon jam. Tender, with just the right amount of sweet and savory, this definitely hit the spot.

This pork belly with apricot braise was sweet and savory here at The Flying Pig.
Most everything here is made from scratch and sourced from local farms and ranchers. Like many other independent eateries in Oceanside, Flying Pig has developed a fiercely loyal following, endearing it to the community.
This tasty neighborhood eatery was named one of the Top 10 Standout Pizzerias in Southern California by AAA Magazine. I can usually tell when ingredients are fresh, and that was the case with the house-baked bread and soft sofrito butter. Oh my goodness, this simple, crusty bread infused with olive oil was divine. We would have been happy just eating this for our meal.
What’s their secret? To start, they make their dough from scratch—a three-day process that starts with imported Italian flour. Roxanna, the owner, uses this flour because it has less gluten, allowing many of her guests to enjoy everything on the menu without issues. One customer was so moved that, with tear-filled eyes, she hugged Roxanna and said, “I can finally eat again.”
All dishes are made from scratch, including their pasta, sauces, and mozzarella. But for the showstopper, I ordered their Lasagna Bolognese with San Marzano Tomatoes, a rich meat sauce with ham, a house-blended cheese, and topped with a creamy Mornay sauce.
The presentation was spectacular. A metal cylinder sat atop a vibrant red layer of sauce, when it was lifted off, the plate overflowed with a gooey, cheesy blend of flavorful ingredients. It was simply the best I’ve ever had—in any country! A must-try for any serious foodie.

The Lasagna Bolognese at Allmine is the best I have ever had. Comes with an amazing presentation that’s topped with Mornay sauce.
Finally, for dessert, we ordered their chocolate cannoli. They start with a sweet, crispy pastry shell, fill it with decadent dark chocolate and place it atop a toasted marshmallow—fabulous!
I would describe our entire experience here as a masterclass in how to impress lovers of Italian cuisine
We have been big fans of Handel’s since we first tried it years ago. Their commitment to quality and small batch production has fueled their growth to 150 locations in 15 states. It’s definitely a rich indulgence for us, but we saved room for this decadent treat.
Handel’s has created a couple custom flavors specifically for the Oceanside location, and we tried their O’side O’riginal. This sunshine-inspired scoop is made with real bananas, marshmallow ripple, and sugar cookie gems. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey, all while watching the sun dip below the ocean.
With an abundance of sunshine, Pacific Ocean watersports, interesting diversions, and a thriving gastronomic scene, Oceanside has blossomed into its own, evolving from its early days as a surf town and military playground.
Having just scratched the surface, there’s far more here than meets the eye. From Mission San Luis Rey, the “King of Missions, to Harbor Beach, recently named the Best Beach in California by USA Today’s 2024 Reader’s Choice Award, this city is full of surprises. Whether you’re looking for a quick getaway or an extended vacation, Oceanside delivers more than you might expect and does it with coastal style!
If You Go:
California Welcome Center Oceanside
This state welcome center was our first stop upon arriving. With its colorful skateboard display, a bright orange 1976 convertible VW, complete with surfboard, and beachy decor, it immediately put us into vacation mode! This is also the perfect spot to ask questions, chat with locals, and pick up brochures on nearby attractions.

The California Welcome Center Oceanside has this 1976 Orange VW convertible in the lobby, complete with surfboard added.
Located in the heart of downtown, the Brick Hotel has undergone many transformations since its founding as a hardware store in 1888. Today, this family-run property is a lovingly restored 10-room boutique hotel that seamlessly integrates its red-brick charm with modern conveniences.
Nestled between the rooftop Cococabana Bar and the ground-floor Tiki Lounge, the owners have preserved the hotel’s historic character—most notably the exposed brick wall—while incorporating contemporary furnishings and amenities.
We found the contactless check-in process smooth and convenient, and our second-floor suite offered views of the city’s cultural district. Inside, the space was bright and comfortable, with a cozy queen platform bed, high-speed Wi-Fi, en suite bathroom and shower, and a smart TV preloaded with Netflix and Hulu.
Right next door to The Brick Hotel is Frankie’s Cocktail Lounge. This retro bar evokes the speakeasy era with dim lighting, plush green-upholstered booths, and crystal chandeliers. It’s a great local spot for a date night or evening cocktails.

We stayed at the historic Brick Hotel with a tiki bar in the lobby and a rooftop bar on top.

From January 14-February 11, 2026, Oceanside will be hosting a “Swell Plate” series. Local chefs will craft special “swell plates” to showcase their creativity while highlighting the city’s vibrant culinary scene. You can earn prizes by stamping your food passport as you try various venues, while discovering the rich gastronomy that Oceanside has to offer.
Getting Around While Exploring Things to do in Oceanside, California
The city has made it easy to get around with their “Go’side” shuttle service. Covering a three-mile area, including Oceanside Harbor, downtown, and South Oceanside, their small vans offer point-to-point rides for just $3 each. After downloading the Ride Circuit app, we were able to use it like Uber or Lyft, which made getting around much easier than having to grab our car every time we wanted to venture out.
