Here’s some helpful information straight from Wild Planet Albacore Tuna to explain the differences in canned fish out there:
“Canned tuna is a staple in most U.S. households, but most of the tuna on grocery shelves is caught by mainstream commercial fishing methods that not only threaten the health of our oceans but also negatively impact other marine animals, coastal fishing communities and potentially even the food supply for future generations.
A newer, more sustainable alternative is to purchase tuna that is 100% pole & line-caught – a method that involves catching one fish at a time. (Don’t be fooled by brands that say their tuna is “wild caught.” That just means it was caught in the ocean and not farmed.)
Here are five benefits to choosing pole and line-caught tuna from Wild Planet – the first company to promote pole & line fishing at scale.
1) It prevents overfishing that depletes tuna stocks by catching adult fish faster than they can breed and replenish the population, helping ensure that our oceans will continue to help feed the world for generations to come.
2) It protects seabirds, sea turtles, sharks and other marine species that are captured unintentionally by industrial fishing methods like longline fishing and die in the process.
3) It avoids the waste of billions tons of fish that die in commercial fishing nets every year because they have suffocated by the time the nets are collected or are discarded because they are the wrong age, size or species.
4) It supports independent fishermen and their communities, employing 10 times more people than large purse seine vessels, paying premium tuna prices, and strengthening their local economies.
5) It lowers mercury levels because it catches younger, smaller, migratory tuna near the surface rather than older and larger tuna that have accumulated more mercury.
